Institute of Electron Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine invites you to participate in the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE (dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Professor Yu.M. Lomsadze’s birthday) .
The conference will be held on December 17-18 2024 at the Institute of Electron Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 21 Universytetska Str., Uzhhorod 88017, Ukraine.
Participation in the conference is also available via Zoom.
PREHISTORY
December 14, 2024 will be the Centennial Birthday Anniversary of Professor Yuriy Melitonovych Lomsadze – a famous Ukrainian scientist, a leading specialist in the field of theoretical physics, the founder of the Department of Theoretical Physics of Uzhgorod State University and the located at that times in Uzhgorod Theory of Hadrons Department of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which became part of the Institute of Electronic Physics NAS of Ukraine as a Department of the Theory of Elementary Interactions.
Yuriy Melitonovich Lomsadze was born on December 14, 1924 in Baku. He began his first scientific research as a student at the Department of the Structure of Matter at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. It was at that time that a team of experienced teachers, well known in the world theoretical scientists, worked at the physics faculty – M.M. Bogolyubov, L.D. Landau, M.A. Markov, I.E. Tamm, D.D. Ivanenko. These scientists greatly contributed to the formation of Yuriy Lomsadze as a highly qualified theoretical physicist. Those were the years of the formation of a new field of fundamental research that was actively developing since the beginning of the 1950s – particle physics and high-energy physics. That is the reason why the problems of nuclear forces and elementary particles belonged to the main scientific interests of the young theorist. His university diploma thesis "To the pair theory of nuclear forces", performed under the scientific supervision of Academician M.A. Markov, was published in 1949 in one of the most prestigious scientific journals. This and a number of subsequent publications of Yuriy Melitonovych formed the basis of his candidate's (Ph.d) thesis "On the singularity of the electromagnetic potential in higher approximations of perturbation theory", which he successfully defended in May 1954. Already in the early scientific works of Yu.M. Lomsadze showed a deep understanding of the basics of quantum mechanics and quantum theory, freshness and originality of the view.
The profound influence of this approach on Y.M. Lomsadze’s further scientific activity essentially determined the style of his work. The main content of this style consisted in the selection of the most fundamental, axiomatic, key problems of theoretical physics and in the creation of adequate mathematical research methods.
In 1958, a postgraduate course was opened at the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Uzhgorod State University. The first student and successor of the ideas of Professor Yu.M. Lomsadze was Volodymyr Ivanovich Lendyel. The dispersion relations have been applied successfully to the description of the differential and total scattering cross sections of π-mesons on nucleons at low energies. In 1964, V.I. Lendyel successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Lviv State University named after I. Franko. At the beginning of the 1960s, the works of Yu.M. Lomsadze and his students caused great resonance n scientific community. Caused by the coupling constant an analytical properties of the quantum-mechanical and field-theoretic scattering amplitude has been studied. They were also the first to carry out a theoretical description of bound, virtual and resonance states of atomic systems in terms of partial amplitude poles in the complex plane of the coupling constant. Among those, who grew up under his direct scientific supervising and among his students, are seven full doctors and more than 60 scientists with PhD.
Yuriy Melitonovych was one of the first to realize the great possibilities of modern methods of mathematical physics in the study of fundamental problems of high-energy physics. He devoted a series of works to the most topical problems of the axiomatic quantum field theory, in particular to the experimental verification of its general principles, which embody our modern ideas about the most fundamental properties of matter and space-time.
Yu.M. Lomsadze showed great interest in the methodology of science. His main scientific works in this direction were devoted to the methodological problems of quantum mechanics and the theory of measurements, epistemology, to the role of science in the scientific and technological revolution, and the relationship between fundamental and applied sciences. These works played an important role in the formation and development of the methodological foundations of contemporary quantum theory.
